Viks' Nielsen feels Rocky Mountain high
Sandpoint 4th, Post Falls 6th at River City Duals
POST FALLS -- Columbia from Nampa held off a furious charge from Lewiston to win the 22-team River City Duals wrestling tournament Saturday at the Arena with a 38-24 victory.
Post Falls 145-pounder Danny Booth went undefeated (5-0) en route to winning the Dave Linerud Memorial Award for the outstanding wrestler, as named by the tournament officials.
Sandpoint lost its only dual of the tournament to Pasco in the third-place match, falling 48-24 to finish fourth.
Timberlake, led by 189-pounder Josh Goodman, who went through 5-0, turned out to be the surprise of the tournament. The Tigers dropped a 50-30 decision to Capital of Boise to finish 10th overall.
"This was a character test for us," Timberlake coach Matt Neff said. "We knew there were going to be no easy matches. You go from one great team to another, there's no down time, so we really rose to the occasion."
The Bulldogs had three guys go through the tournament unbeaten and finished 4-1.
"We're happy with the way our kids competed," first-year Sandpoint coach Kirk Hartzell said. "Half of our kids are veterans and the other half are real young. Somebody different stepped up in every match and we're excited the guys are comfortable with rallying and are getting emotionally committed to each other."
Post Falls lost a heartbreaker to Pasco in the previous round, losing in the final seconds of the final match to drop down into the match for fifth place.
"We have to get to work. We have to get better and everybody's going to be working toward that goal," Post Falls coach Dennis Amende said. "I don't want to say I'm super disappointed. I'm more concerned about how we reacted to a tough loss. Those are the kinds of things we need to learn from."
Despite a veteran team with three unbeaten wrestlers, the Trojans came out flat, lost 54-22 to Nampa and finished sixth.

MISSOULA, Mont. -- Jesse Nielsen of Coeur d'Alene High School beat Max Galland of Great Falls 10-2 to earn the 160-pound title at the Rocky Mountain Classic. Coeur d'Alene finished seventh out of 28 teams with 129 points.
The Vikings' Andrew Palmer (98) won the third-place match, beating Jared Maines of Central Valley 10-5. Kenny Staub (105) lost to Tyler Clark of University High by pin and placed fourth.
Grant Turner (285) pinned Brandon Mills of Libby to finish fifth, Sam Howard (119) lost to Jake Dallaserra of Butte 7-1 in a match for seventh and eighth places, and Christian Putman (135) lost to Tyler Simmett of Central Valley 7-4 and finished eighth.
